Achieving a Show-Ready Smooth Coat with Starfire's Routine

4 min read

Preparing your dog for the show ring means every detail matters, especially the coat. A smooth coat needs to be clean, hydrated, and have a natural, healthy shine. This routine uses Starfire’s Canine Care products to achieve a show-ready finish. It focuses on deep cleaning, intensive hydration, and precise styling to highlight your dog’s natural coat quality.

The Foundation: Deep Cleanse

Start any show preparation with a deep cleanse. This step removes all traces of previous products, environmental build-up, and anything else that might dull the coat. It opens the hair cuticle, preparing it to fully absorb the nourishing treatments that follow.

Use Stripper for this first step. It is a chelating and purifying shampoo. It lifts every kind of residue and product build-up. Lather your dog twice in warm water, making sure to rinse thoroughly after each lather. This ensures the coat is completely clean and ready.

Intensive Hydration: The Mask

After the deep cleanse, your dog’s coat is ready for intensive hydration. A mask will infuse moisture and nutrients, leaving the coat soft and shiny.

First, blot the coat well with a Big Size Microfiber Towel to remove excess water. The coat should be damp, not dripping wet. Then, apply Fortaleza Treatment. This mask provides maximum nutrition without changing the coat’s natural volume. It delivers an extraordinary shine and seals dry or damaged ends. Apply it in three zones: chest, front legs, neck and head; back and underside; hips, skirts, tail and rear legs. Massage it into the ends of the coat.

Leave the mask on for 45 to 60 minutes. During this time, never wrap your dog in an absorbent towel. Instead, wrap your dog in a plastic cape or bag, then a towel and a warm blanket. This helps the product penetrate without being pulled out of the coat. After 20 to 30 minutes, let your dog cool for five minutes. Then, rinse the coat thoroughly with plenty of cold water. A cold rinse helps to seal the cuticle and lock in the moisture and nutrients.

Styling for the Ring: Sprays and Cream

Once the coat is rinsed and towel-blotted again, it is time for styling. This part of the routine enhances texture, adds hydration, and provides control for the show ring.

Immediately after the cold rinse, while the coat is still damp, spray Jealousy generously. This is the most concentrated hydration spray in the line. It helps to keep the coat moisturized. Next, spray Flattery onto the coat. This styling spray provides professional texture and a UV barrier. It helps prepare the coat for drying.

Begin drying your dog. When the coat is nearly dry, spray Flattery again. This builds on the initial texture. Then, apply a very small amount of Pride. Pride is a structuring pomade for hold and volume control. It is very concentrated, so use a small amount. Work it into areas where you want control, like the neck, tail, and legs. Finish brushing the coat without the dryer, letting Pride set the desired shape.

You can find other options for sprays and grooming finish products to suit your dog’s specific needs.

The Final Check: Combing

The last step before entering the ring is a thorough check for any missed tangles or knots.

Once the coat is completely dry, take a large Professional Combs. Run the comb from root to tip over the entire coat. This final pass ensures the coat is perfectly smooth and free of any snags. It confirms your dog’s coat is ready for presentation.
